Most lighting is designed to disappear. Moooi goes the other way: the fitting is an object in its own right, and the room is arranged around it. That makes the choice a decision about the whole interior, not only about the light.
The collections combine sculptural form with LED technology and proper optical control, so a piece that reads as art still lights the table underneath it properly. Shade, diffusion and finish are worked out per model, which is why two Moooi pieces in the same room can feel quite different.
In practice these fittings do their best work where there is space around them: above a dining table, in a stairwell, in a double-height living room, in a hotel lobby. In a low or crowded room a sculptural piece competes with everything else and loses.
They also combine well with discreet lighting. One Moooi piece as the focus, with hidden or directional light doing the ordinary work around it, gives a room a centre without making it hard to live in.
